Why 2020+ BMW & Mercedes ECUs Need Unlocking

From 2019–2020 onwards, manufacturers introduced highly secured MD1/MG1 engine control units to prevent modification. These ECUs cannot be flashed over OBD until they are physically unlocked.

How the ECU Unlock Process Works

For BMW and Mercedes vehicles equipped with Bosch MDG1 ECUs, the process is simple:

Remove the ECU from the vehicle (or we can do this for you at our workshop).

Ship the ECU to Autotuner HQ using their secure, insured mail-in system.

The unit is professionally unlocked, bench-tested, and returned ready for:

Important Notes Before Sending Your ECU

Unlock is per ECU—if your car has a dual-ECU setup, both must be unlocked.

The ECU is returned fully stock; any previous software will be removed.

Unlocking is only guaranteed for Autotuner and Autotuner One.

Other tools (KESS V3, Foxflash, MPPS, CMD, etc.) may NOT be compatible after unlock.

Shipping, insurance, and return delivery are all handled automatically.
